WorldWide WCE, a leader in electronic solutions, has launched its latest advancement: the 0.4mm Press-fit Pin. Designed for automotive applications and demanding industrial environments, this pin provides a secure connection between the terminal and the metalized through hole (PTH) of a printed circuit board (PCB).
How the Press-fit works:
The EON Pressure Zone excels at ensuring a reliable connection even under extreme conditions. These include temperature cycles from -40°C to 175°C, high humidity, dry heat and vibrations associated with vehicle conditions.
The key to achieving reliability under these conditions is the formation of a hermetic seal at the interface between the flexible part of the terminal and the PTH. This seal prevents the penetration of moisture or corrosive gases, avoiding the formation of surface oxides that could increase contact resistance and cause instability or system failure.
Exceptional holding forces:
The WorldWide WCE 0.4mm Press-fit Pin is held in place by extremely high normal forces. These range from approximately 25,000 g for the 0.81mm model to around 4,000 g for the 0.4mm model (the 0.64mm model reaches 8,000 g). In comparison, typical blade-receptacle contact systems have normal forces between 100 g and 200 g.
Design and materials:
The 0.4 mm EON pressure zone is designed to work with the standard 0.60±0.05 mm metallized hole size. It achieves optimum retention at both ends of the PTH size range through elastic and plastic deformation. The standard material is CuNiSi (C19010), although CuSn4 and CuSn6 options are also offered. In addition, a standard tin coating is provided, with a reduced version for high-density applications and to prevent the formation of tin whiskers.
The 0.4mm design was created using finite element analysis (FEA) and refined through laboratory testing to meet the rigorous requirements of the Tier 1 automotive industry.
Tools and assembly:
The flexible eye of the 0.4mm Press-fit Pin is only 0.3mm at its widest section, requiring extremely precise stamping dies. WorldWide WCE ensures the protection of these dies through a careful strip piloting process, tight tolerances and proper lubrication.
Assembly of 0.4mm Press-fit leads onto PCBs can be efficiently accomplished with a WorldWide WCE insertion machine and custom insertion head or any insertion system compatible with a custom head.
